While we didn’t get enough of the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 6 is now seemingly around the corner. The PS5 still had a lot of life left, and in my opinion, it feels a bit early to be releasing the PS6, but Sony definitely has something in mind with the latest console.
However, there have been a few rumors going around about the console, and it felt like a crime not to share those rumors with you.
Keep in mind that whether you have a PS5 or are planning on getting the PS6 once it releases, you need to have the perfect gaming setup at home so that you can make the best out of your console. For instance, you should have a properly ventilated station to put your console on, a stellar display such as a 1440p monitor (or a 4K one to take things to the next level), and an ergonomic gaming chair. All of these features ensure you have a comfortable gaming experience.
One other element that we often overlook is a solid internet connection to download games as quickly as possible. You must find the best internet near you and then choose one that ensures a smooth gameplay experience. If it’s available, I recommend a fiber internet connection since it gives you superfast internet speed, low latency, and high reliability. Whether you stick to your PS5 or get the new PS6, you still have an unbeatable gaming setup with all these benefits.
Coming back to the PS6, here are all the rumors we know so far, so that you can start making up your mind whether you will be getting one for yourself or not. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Rumored Production Window
As of right now, all we know is that Sony is set to start production of the PlayStation 6 somewhere around mid-to-early 2027. This means there’s still a year to go for the production to start, which gives us time to make the most out of our PS5s and try out the latest PS5 titles.
Plus, you don’t have to worry about games like Wolverine and Grand Theft Auto VI releasing on the next console, since the games are set to release this year for the PS5.
However, some reports say that the release for PS6 may be pushed to 2028 or 2029 since Sony intends to increase the life cycle of the PS5. Plus, AI data centers and powerful RAM cost a lot, which is why I understand why Sony would want to delay the next console.
The PlayStation 4 was a unique console that performed well and had a 7-year-long life cycle before the PS5’s launch, so we never know what Sony has in mind for the PS6’s life cycle.
Another Custom AMD Processor
Previously, the PS5 used a custom AMD chip, which was an 8-core CPU based on the AMD Zen 2 infrastructure. This took the PlayStation 5 lightyears ahead of the PlayStation 4 in terms of overall data processing. This also made games load superfast, and the console just felt like a breeze, which was something very new for gamers, as it took their experience up a notch.
However, you’ll be glad to know that Sony may further improve the PlayStation 6’s chipset by integrating another custom version of the AMD processor, which will be called the Zen 6 or Zen 7, and even better than the Zen 2. This gives you an idea of how well the PS6 may perform than the PS5. This processor will be codenamed the “Orion,” and it is set to give you the kind of console experience you have never felt before. This gives you all the more reason to consider buying the console, when it finally releases.
Enhanced Graphic Performance
I remember how everyone was taken aback by how amazing the PS5 performed in terms of graphics processing. Games seemed so realistic and immersive that people couldn’t believe it at one point. Sony also introduced new features such as ray-tracing, which allowed you to experience realistic lighting and shadows in games. Not only that, but it also focused on reflections as well, making them super realistic.
However, there are rumors going around that the PS6 may offer better rasterization performance and 6-12x better ray-tracing capabilities so that you have an even more realistic gaming experience. While ray-tracing gives realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections, it’s still a slower and more intensive process than rasterization. This allows the PS6 to give direct competition to high-end gaming PCs with powerful graphics cards such as the RTX 5090.
While these rumors revolve around the basic features, some other rumors are going around in terms of the design and features, such as backward compatibility with the PS4 and PS5, a detachable disc drive to turn your console into a digital one, better AI-integration through PSSR, and AI gameplay mechanics for better NPC behavior, and so on. Now we’ll just have to wait for Sony to officially announce the console so we know what we’re getting.
